Become an Interpreter

As an interpreter trained by IWSO, you can help service providers in Ottawa and Eastern Ontario better communicate with their clients who do not speak either English or French, while being exposed to a wide variety of interesting subject matter and experiences.

IWSO provides Interpretation training to individuals with the skills, tools and knowledge to deliver a professional interpreter service. Trainees must be fluent in English, and a second or third language and are required to pass the Interpreter Language Skills Assessment Tool (ILSAT), a test designed to evaluate the language proficiency of a prospective candidate for the training.

Pre-requisites

  • Must be eligible to work in Canada
  • Must be fluent in English and one or more languages
  • Must submit resume
  • Must succeed in the interview

Interview

An interview is the first step toward becoming an interpreter. As a prospective candidate, you will be rated during the interview to determine if you have the required qualities and competencies to be eligible for the training.

Test (ILSAT) and Fee

After the interview, selected candidates will be invited to take the ILSAT test.  If successful, the prospective candidate will be encouraged to enroll in the training program upon payment of the training fees.

ILSAT test fee: $250 for an in-person test or $275 for the remote test (non-refundable)

Training and Fee

The training follows a standardized provincial curriculum of approximately 120 hours and includes the ethical standards of practice, orientation to domestic violence, sexual violence, partner assault, human trafficking and terminologies (medical, legal).   The online training is delivered over the course of approximately 12 weeks.

Upon completion of the training, trainees will be required to complete the final written and audio tests and achieve a pass mark of 75% for each test.

Training fee: $500 (subject to change)
